Access launches integrated printing for the boarding pass revolution

BGR for Heathrow Airport

Reading, UK, February 20, 2008 - Access IS has released its new BGR130, an integrated boarding gate reader and receipt printer for handling 2D bar-coded boarding passes (BCBPs) displayed on the screens of mobile phones and PDAs, and for more efficient handling of the home-printed travel documents already well established with airlines.

As the implications of handling passengers travelling with ‘mobile’ boarding passes continue to be explored, Access devices are being deployed by airlines to issue boarding pass receipts at the boarding gate.  Passengers travelling using their mobile phones will be able to progress directly to the gate where they will receive a boarding receipt on presentation of the mobile boarding pass.  This will enable them to turn off their mobile device before entering the air-bridge, satisfying existing safety requirements to have phones turned-off while aircraft are being refuelled.  For customers travelling with mobile devices the BGR130 can be configured to issue a second receipt for retention by the agent, required by some airlines for their passenger reconciliation process.

Additionally, the receipt printing facility solves operational bottlenecks at the gate caused by the bar code new technology.  To satisfy requirements to reconcile passengers, some airlines manually tear off and retain a portion of home printed documents as a passenger receipt or hand write the arrival of the passenger on a paper schedule.  To avoid this manual process, the receipt printer can be programmed to issue a single receipt for home printed passes, allowing the agent to exchange the home printed document for a boarding receipt.

The BGR130 has further integrated functionality.  A 12-key keypad allows seat changes to be facilitated at the gate and an integrated 4-track MSR is incorporated to read ATB2 travel documents in the period leading up to their complete withdrawal, scheduled for 2010.  The BGR130 is a product extension combining Access’ well-established BGR120 engine with its RP9000 receipt printer accessory. The RP9000 has proved to be a simple, reliable and robust printer for rapid printing of receipts that, with a 92 metre paper roll capacity, can provide receipts for more than 1100 passengers, minimizing changes during aircraft boarding.
