Access IS wins contract to re-equip boarding gates and check-in at South African airports

Keyboards and BGRs at all major South African airports

Reading, UK, November 2009  – Access, the data input technology company, has landed a contract to supply customised keyboards and boarding gate readers to three of South Africa’s largest airports – Johannesburg, Capetown and the new airport currently being built in Durban. Working closely with SITA, the world’s largest systems integrator for the air transport sector, Access will supply 241 boarding gate readers and 705 keyboards across the three sites.

The boarding gate readers can read barcodes from printed documents or portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones. Bar codes are read face-up, rather than scanned face-down on a flatbed scanner. Face-up reading has been shown to be faster, more accurate and more convenient.

Each keyboard has an integrated optical character reader and magnetic stripe reader, enabling it to read passports, identification cards, credit cards and loyalty cards.

Both of these compact devices are designed for simple plug-and-play operation while taking up minimal desk space.

Commenting on the deal, Steve Duley, SITA’s South Africa Sales Director, said, “With South African airports about to experience a huge influx of travellers during the soccer World Cup in 2010, we needed to find data input devices that meet the highest quality standards while being commercially competitive. Access IS provided the solutions.”
