Stuttgart Airport selects Access boarding gate readers following independent tests

Keyboards and BGRs for Stuttgart airport

Reading, UK, January 21, 2009  – Access, the data input technology company, has won an order valued at over €500,000 for check-in desk and boarding gate equipment at Stuttgart airport as part of a major refurbishment programme. This followed extensive evaluation of its products by the systems integrator responsible for CUTE installation at Stuttgart.

The Access BGR120S gate reader was evaluated over a two-week period during which a boarding gate equipped with Access products was assessed against alternative products. Agents that used the gates were surveyed after the trial. Access products were found to be faster and easier to operate and they reduced boarding times significantly.

Stuttgart departure gates are located by large windows extending to a height of two floors and the assessment specifically looked at the gate readers’ ability to cope with direct sunlight.

The BGR120S was particularly successful in its ability to read barcodes on a variety of media including paper and card boarding passes, and those presented on electronic devices  - mobile phones or PDAs.

The face-up operation of the Access devices meant that they worked reliably in sunlit areas. Flatbed scanners were not so consistent. The Access BGR was also preferred because of its clear visual and audible signals that indicate a successful reading of the barcode.

Susanne Hermann, Stuttgart Airport’s Manager Traffic Operations commented: “The thorough evaluation of different products made this decision a relatively easy one – there was a very clear preference for the Access BGRs and keyboards based on their real-world performance. They are very fast, easy to use and read bar codes reliably from mobile phone screens or paper boarding passes. Feedback from the airlines and from agents was very positive.”

Since the introduction of its first boarding gate readers in 2006, Access has become market leader and supplies its products to over 100 major airports worldwide.
